What are Some Common RAM 3500 Engine Problems?

Your 3500 is a towing and hauling machine, quintessentially RAM, a work truck built for the toughest jobs. It's had a lot of serious engines to drive that excellence over the years, too -- some supremely powerful ones. Among them, a 5.7-liter V8, a 6.7-liter, six-cylinder diesel, and a 6.4-liter V8.

Unfortunately, those engines haven't been without issues -- not those in the base Tradesman trim, and not those in the Limited trim at the top of the line, either. If you're running into trouble with yours, you came to the right place for advice on what to do about it. Here's a couple scenarios you might see.

Bad Spark Plugs; Blown Head Gaskets

If you're having trouble starting, the "why" can be tough to pin down. After all, a lot of parts have to work for startup to happen (and they'll stop working when you stall). Plus, you can see all kinds of symptoms -- not just noises like knocking or ticking.

Best thing to do with a RAM 3500 is to plug in a code reader or advanced scan tool and check for error codes; they'll usually tell you what the problem is. Often, if it's not a faulty starter, it could be anything from a failed spark plug to a bad head gasket.

Spark plugs go bad, you'll know it from things like:

  • Widened or corroded plug leads
  • Engine misfires and failure
  • The head gasket blows, and you'll see:

  • Bubbles in the radiator and coolant
  • Your motor oil turning white
  • Oil or coolant leaks around gaskets
  • Low coolant levels without any apparent leak
  • Bad Turbochargers

If your exhaust is smokier than usual, most likely, with RAM 3500 trucks, this is a case of turbocharger failure. Several signs can tell you this is what's happening. Look for:

  • A Check Engine light on the dash
  • A clogged oil filter
  • Low oil levels
  • The engine running louder than usual
  • Problems speeding up
  • Worsening gas mileage
  • Obviously, in any case, you'll want to replace whatever the problem is. Need help diagnosing repairs? There's always the pros.
