Three Common Jeep Scrambler Problems You Shouldn't Ignore

Your Scrambler is, like its sibling of the mid-1980s, the Jeep CJ-7, a classic SUV, one that calls back to the glory days of the iconic Willys CJ-5 of the 1950s. You know it, though, as the ideal cross between a compact pickup and an off-road vehicle (ORV) -- one that only Jeep can deliver.

Want to keep your piece of the legendary CJ series in the best possible shape for decades, hundreds of thousands of miles more? You'll want to stay on top of regular maintenance. More importantly, though, you'll need to take care of a few issues the base, SR, Laredo, and Renegade trims can have, if you run into them.

Here's what to keep an eye out for.

1. Faulty Pitman Arms

Does your Scrambler have larger tires installed? Oftentimes, hard driving can bend the pitman arm in the steering system. It may be made of ductile iron, and so, it should be pretty rugged, but warping can still happen. You can try to avoid the situation: regularly inspect the arm's nut, and tighten it as needed. However, there's a good chance that a bent arm's going to end up a damaged arm, and that, you'll have to replace.

2. Bad Steering Shaft Couplers

Having trouble steering your Scrambler? Most likely, the coupler at the steering box is the problem. The worst possible outcome: the shaft can totally separate from the coupler. That'll mean an accident. Your best bet: replacement -- a couple with solid U-joints. Not sure how to install them? A Mopar service center can help.

3. Failed Wheel Hub Bolts

If the bolts on the wheel hubs of your Scrambler have started to come loose, it's likely because of their faulty five- and six-bolt constructions. You can try to keep this from happening: check the bolts for firm fit, or secure them better using a thread locker or locking washers. Oftentimes, though, you'll have to replace the bolts. Consider switching to more durable studs also.
