What are Some of the Problems a Dodge W150 Can Have?

Your W150. It's more than just another half-ton pickup. It's quintessentially Dodge, a truck only the brand's legendary D Series can deliver.

These days, it's a classic: a great work truck, and an even better off-roader. In other words, one well worth maintaining. Stay on top of that, and it should run for decades. Here's a few common issues you might have sometimes, and what to do about them.

1. Its Oil System Can be Faulty

Oil can leak from many different places -- the gaskets on the valve covers, for example, or the timing cover gasket, and even the gasket on the intake manifold, not to mention from the distributor O-ring and the rear main seal area's bearing cap. It can sometimes get into the distributor, too. This was a known issue for W150 models from between 1990 and 1993. You'll have to replace any problematic parts, including the distributor, if it gets oil in it.

2. Its Brake Shoes Can Fail

If the 12-inch rear brakes on your W150 aren't working right, it's most likely that the brake shoes have worn out prematurely. This was a known issue for W150 models from between '90 and '93. They'll have to be replaced.

3. Its Transmission Can Go Bad

If the auto transmission in your W150 is having trouble changing gears, it's often because of transmission oil cooler problems. Inspect the cooler and lines and flush the system if needed; if that doesn't work, replacement's recommended.
