Common PT Cruiser Problems No Chrysler Enthusiast Should Ignore

Cool hatchback or cooler two-door convertible, your PT Cruiser is the quintessential fetchingly retro take on dependable, fuel-efficient, and roomy -- one as only Chrysler can deliver. It was well worth the investment, and so, keep up with regular service, and it should stay that way, lasting you a couple decades at least -- maybe a few hundred-thousand miles.

Good thing you came to us here at Factory Mopar Direct for advice on what to do. Here are some issues you might run into from time to time, and how to deal with them.

1. Its Lights Going Bad

If the turn signals and the other outside lights on your PT Cruiser (the headlights, taillights, and so on) aren't working right, and you've got a dead battery to boot, there's a good chance it's all caused by a defective turn signal lever (also called a multifunction switch). This is a known issue for models from between 2001 and 2009 with 245,000 miles on their odometers. The switch will need to be replaced.

2. The Ignition Failing

If your engine cranks but won't start, or it just won't start at all, the problem is likely a faulty wireless control module (WCM) (itself caused by static discharge in the ignition). This is a known issue for PT Cruiser models from between 2001 and 2010 with 143,000 miles on their odometers on average. You can try disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery to temporarily reset it so the car can start, but you'll have to put in a new lock cylinder eventually to actually solve the problem.

3. The Power Steering Being Faulty

If your PT Cruiser is having steering trouble, there's a good chance the high-pressure power steering hose is the problem. It's likely worn out from contacting the transaxle differential cover. This was a known issue for models from between 2001 and 2009 with 224,000 miles or less on them. There was a recall to inspect and reposition the hose, but if the hose is damaged, it'll need to be replaced anyway.
