Why is My Chrysler Pacifica Check Engine Light on?

Your Pacifica is your family minivan. You trust it with everyone's safety around Detroit. So, when the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL; the "Check Engine light") comes on, admittedly, it can be a little nerve-wracking.

After all, it's not something that happens all that often with a Chrysler vans. And what a Check Engine light means isn't always obvious. In fact, it can mean a lot of things:

  • A loose gas cap
  • Dirty or damaged oxygen sensors or mass airflow sensors
  • A faulty ignition coil(s)
  • A bad thermostat
  • Your powertrain control module (PCM) needs reprogramming at a dealer or service center
  • A bad catalytic converter
  • A fuel injector malfunction
  • A defective head gasket or emission control system part (like an evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge control valve)
  • Broken spark plugs
  • Of course, sometimes, nothing's actually wrong; the MIL light can just come on when, say, there's a change in humidity (which happens pretty frequently in Michigan's climate -- all that moisture off the Great Lakes); it should turn off after a short time. With minivans like Pacifica, though, there's a couple common problems that are more likely.

    Engine Valve Problems

If you run an inspection (plug in a code reader) and get readings for "multiple cylinder misfires," for example, there's a good chance carbon's built up on the engine valves. This was an issue with Pacifica vans from between 2004 and 2008 -- those with anywhere from around 60,000 miles on the odometer to more than 170,000 miles.

Usually, all you have to do is clean the chamber. If that doesn't do the trick, though, the valves might need to be replaced. Either way, we recommend updating the valve spring retainers to help keep this from happening again. We've got the replacements; they're OEM-quality, too, and cheaper than MSRP, so you'll be getting the best deal possible.

    Bad Transmission Solenoid Valve

If you're having trouble shifting, gears are slipping, you get stuck in certain gears, or you're stuck in "Limp Mode," there's a good chance you've got a problem with a solenoid valve in the transmission. This is most likely if your Pacifica is from 2004, 2005, or 2006, with anywhere from 70,000 to 170,000 miles clocked. You'll need to replace the valve.
