Tire Maintenance 101: Care Tips
Turning, braking, overall handling -- they're not just important to good ride quality. Here in Michigan, as anywhere, they're critical to safe driving. You can't get either on bad tires.
To avoid an accident -- with common tire problems, like low tire pressure and shallow tread depth, or relatedly, wheel misalignment, you'll almost certainly end up in one -- check your tires' condition regularly. Monthly is your best bet. Of course, you're a trucker that drives bad roads around Detroit -- over potholes, in a cold climate, with regular bad weather -- or a commuter driving long distances out of Ann Arbor, you'll want to do tire inspections more often.
Here's some advice on what to do to maintain your tires.
The Basics: Keep Them Inflated
Not overinflated, and not underinflated, either -- this'll help you avoid flats and blowouts. If your tires are overinflated, you'll end up with tread wear toward the center; if they're underinflated, tread wear will show up near the edges.
If tread wear's erratic, though -- i.e., you see "cupping" -- more than likely, your wheel alignment is off. Of course, if a tread's raised, or part of the sidewall is, you might have another issue -- a belt making up part of the tire might've separated. Most of the time, there's no fixing things, really; you'll have to replace parts as needed.
The Long Run: Look for Signs of Problems
Feel your ride vibrating while driving, maybe hear a thump along with it? There's a good chance you've got a tire imbalance, a flat spot in the treads, or a tire belt separation. Pulling to one side, though: that's usually a case of underinflation or tire damage (on the side the vehicle pulls to), if not a brake or wheel issue.
See any of these, and you should take care of them ASAP. That can mean anything from tire or suspension replacement (parts like shocks) to wheel alignment or brake replacement. You can go the DIY route, but if you'd prefer a service pro at a dealership or service center to take care of it, that's always a good idea. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions; we'll be glad to help.
