Factory MOPAR Oil Filters
Motor oil lubricates engine parts. However, it's got a few impurities to begin with. Plus, it captures even more contaminants as it greases. That means that, over time, muck can build up in it. If that isn't bad enough, if your radiator isn't working right, the oil can also turn to sludge. The result: oil pump and bearing wear, and double time.
Luckily, your vehicle has a factory oil filter to help keep all that from happening. It's made up of a housing, which attaches and holds the filter to the engine; a medium, which captures said pollutants before they can cause engine problems; and a gasket, which helps prevent oil leaks and closes the filter off from the outside.
Unfortunately, oil filters don't last forever. You'll need to replace them consistently, during every oil change or every other one. That's about every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever benchmark you reach first. The signs it may be time for a change include:
- Your vehicle loses oil pressure
- An engine oil warning light shows up on the dash
- You start having general engine performance problems
Replace the housing gaskets, however, if they get brittle and begin to crack, as that can result in an oil leak. You can access everything either from underneath the engine compartment (once you remove any applicable undertray) or from above the bay itself. Either way, be sure to review your owner's manual for more information on this.
Before you go to put in a new oil filter, though, be sure you're buying the genuine OEM article. Mopar designs them specifically for your brand and model. Aftermarket brands can't always guarantee the required gasket and thread size and using the wrong filter can lead to leaking oil, or worse, complete filter detachment -- and the latter usually causes some serious engine damage.
